About the event
Evgeny Schwartz's The Shadow is a play about duplicity, fickleness, and manipulation. The young scholar Christian-Theodore finds himself in a mystical land where the corruption in the social order parallels and reflects the corruption of the government. Both fear anything and anyone that threatens reform, for implicit in reform is the end of privilege. Written in 1940 at the height of Stalinist expansion of the USSR, when Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Moldova were all annexed through military occupation, The Shadow is a fable for the compacts we make for political and social gain, but also for love. This poetic and philosophical play is timeless, but is particularly relevant today given the war in Ukraine being perpetrated by Stalin's admirer Vladimir Putin.
All ticket sales will be donated to the Devon Ukrainian Association and its Conversation Cafe, a grassroots organization created in the first few weeks of the war to provide humanitarian aid to Ukraine, raise awareness about the war, and support the many Ukrainians who are joining our communities here in the SouthWest.
