About the event

Preparing the Summer Kitchen: Song Workshop

In this free workshop with Ukraine’s Word and Voice Theatre Centre, you will learn traditional Ukrainian folk songs and be introduced to the specific vocal method of Nataliia Polovyinka.

We invite you to experience the strength, beauty and emotional expressiveness of Ukrainian folk tradition. The language is very melodic and is very simple to sing for non-Ukrainian speakers. No previous singing experience is necessary, we believe the innate musicality is present in all people.

These songs tell about the stories of Ukrainian people, their characteristics and qualities, about the traits of their community and about the hauntingly beautiful  landscape of the places they live in. They also speak about the ethics and rules of social life. These songs are a cultural treasure that has been preserved to date. They can be classified in various genres as well as in ritual and non-ritual songs.

This workshop is limited to 20 people. It is part of the Summer Kitchen series. You do not have to participate in the Baking and Song Workshop on Friday 26 August, but your experience on Friday will be richer if you do.
