About Katy Cawkwell

I have been working as a professional storyteller since 1996 in venues across the UK and beyond.

I create contemporary, dramatic performances for adult audiences, based on traditional narratives. My shows have appeared in a wide range of venues: major theatres (inc. Barbican Pit Theatre, Soho Theatre, Derby Guildhall), storytelling clubs and nine international storytelling festivals (inc. a 2 week tour of India in 2016). I was one of four storytellers shortlisted for the Arts Foundation Storytelling Fellowship and I've featured on Radio 3 The Verb and Radio 4 The Storytellers.

I received Arts Council funding for a national tour of The Kingdom of the Heart, in collaboration with cellist Sarah Llewellyn-Jones and produced by Adverse Camber. Recent solo work on tour has been The Falcon Bride (over 20 performances 2014-18 including a mini ACE-funded tour of Iceland) and Tristan and Iseult (15 performances 2019-20, curtailed by Covid). I was part of the line up for the SW tour of Women Who Gave No F*cks created by Story Jam (2021-22) and collaborated on The Wounded King: Fragments of Arthur for Our Time (6 performances to date).

I also perform and lead workshops in educational and corporate settings. I have worked in a wide range of schools, government organisations, businesses and museums, including Royal Opera House Adult Education, English National Opera, The Barbican, The British Museum and The National Gallery. I was commissioned by Mayflower400 to bring The Story of the Mayflower to over 3000 children in Plymouth schools in 2020.

Since moving to Devon, I have set up Artemis Storytelling to bring the very best of performance storytelling to the Exeter area. I also run regular workshops to help local storytellers develop their performance skills, supported in 2021, by an Exeter City of Literature Compact Commission. My latest solo performance piece Artemis: The Wild Within was inspired by following the trail of the goddess whose name I had so casually borrowed for this venture…
